My favorite street artist JR (whom I've blogged about ad nauseum) just launched a new project in the troubled Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. Members of the community were challenged to create their own street art on a super human scale, taking portraits of friends and neighbors to print and paste on building facades. Like all JR projects, the effect is dazzling, not only to outsiders, but to residents themselves. In a New York Times article, one woman said, “It means that we can see ourselves, and be seen by others, differently.” Urban renewal at its best.
