June is rose month at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. We went with Fauxhawk's mama, who was in town for her birthday weekend. I've never seen such a glorious profusion of blooms - or a more heady perfume. Can you imagine going to this place every day for work? It seems unimaginable. Perhaps they might let me pitch a pup tent for the month of June in exchange for some judicious weeding.
We were overwhelmed by the beauty of it all. Once I regained consciousness, I called my mom to tell her what kind of mulch they use for their roses - buckwheat hulls, an incredibly attractive, organic top dressing for all kinds of plants.
We joined my mom to catch the annual workshop that showcases students ages eight to nineteen from the School of American Ballet, the official school of the New York City Ballet. This is one of my favorite events of the year and I was so happy to share it with the Hawk and his mother, both of whom are new to ballet.
It's so moving to see such incredible talent, discipline, hope and joy at work from these beautiful young people - I wonder if what they do on stage is as spiritual an experience for them as it is for me as an observer. The happiest people are earth must be those who can express themselves that fully, and with that much abandon.
