Greek Easter was lovely - thank you so much for all of your Greaster Greetings! I don't have very much in the way of pictures because only aerial photography can capture the mayhem of our family gatherings. Here is a brief moment of serenity, when I stole a few minutes to throw together a centerpiece using flowers from the neighborhood deli.
We ate:
- Tzadziki, taramasalata, melitzanosalata, feta, tsoureki, and olives - assorted dips and cheeses
- Dyed red eggs - tradition dictates that you tap eggs with the person next to you, trying to smash theirs while keeping yours intact. The person with the most intact eggs wins good luck for the year.
- Tsoureki - a braided bread baked with a red egg in the center. We hide a lucky quarter inside.
- Avgolemono soupa - a frothy egg-lemon soup.
- Roasted lamb and potatoes with tons of oregano, garlic, rosemary and olive oil.
- Greek salad
- Karythopita - a classic Greek cake made with cinnamon, cloves, orange, and walnuts, then soaked in a lightly spiced syrup.
- Koulourakia - doughnut shaped cookies sprinked with sesame seeds and flavored with ouzo, an anise liquor.
Then we came home and collapsed in an exhausted heap. Verne and Roy were especially wiped out.
And now the week begins. Naptime, anyone?
